On The Box

What does it mean to be “On the Box?”

One of my interests is the art of Flagging. And this often means getting up on a box and performing. Flagging is part of the flow arts family (Poi, Fans, etc.) and something I started learning at a Halloween party at SOMA Arts in San Francisco. I loved it from the start. I started taking with me out to the clubs, and soon purchased my own first sets of flags.

I was encouraged by many members of the San Francisco Flagging tribe community to get out on stage and try, especially my flagging daddy and mentor, Dan. I learned more moves to dance with and eventually ended up at the flagging classes at Gold’s Gym SOMA location, run by Xavier, a flag performer and creator. I eventually took the art to more performance, when I helped in pulling together a group to perform at the PLAY T-dance party during the Up Your Alley Street Fair Weekend a number of years ago. Following that, Dan offered to teach me how to make my own flags, and I was totally taken in by the art. Soon I was on the box at events all over the US and the world.

I have been progressing in learning the art form, creating many sets of flags each year. I gifted several sets of flags to good friends, mentors and supporters of my art, on both coasts. Please check out my photo gallery of created sets.

If you have an interest in learning more about flagging and performance, check out Flagger Central, a site about flag performance, creation and the flow arts, run by my friend Phillip, one of the top known flag creators and performers, or look up when you are at a club and reach out to the flagger “on the box” and ask them to show you how, you may be surprised at how willing they will be to help.
