I have to admit that I was a bit concerned going into President’s Day Weekend with the San Francisco Bay Bridge being closed and the finale of Fresh SF, that PLAY T-Dance would potentially have a lighter turn out than the usual crowd. Additionally, I had challenges with the Ministry theme, and how it would translate into a dance party, not being a big religious fan. All of those concerns were dismissed in what had to be one of the best PLAY T-Dance parties I have attended.
Let’s start with the core delivery of PLAY – a welcoming attitude from the moment you arrive and throughout the entire experience. Little touches like suckers, fruit tables, candy, and treats, all make you feel welcome and cared for. The harm reduction messages and signage throughout the club was clear and shows a genuine concern for the guests of the party.
The decor was simple and effective, with extra lighting, mirror balls and lasers added to the mix. And while at times the lighting was a bit bright, overall the atmosphere of the club was fitting of the energy of a happy t-dance vibe. The warm colors and twinkles of the mirror ball plus well placed lasers added nice emotions to the music.
The vignettes and go-go dancers added excellent production values to the party, while not grabbing too much attention. The peak performance of the Transcendence Choir was a perfect peak song with Kim English’s “Unspeakable Joy”. The show came on to a rousing cheer, raised the emotional energy in the room, and left without much fanfare. The perfect way to do a show and pump up the energy of the party.
Last, but not least by any means, was the performance by Steve Sherwood. I have been a fan of this guy since I asked him to create a mix for the party bus I put together to Sundance a number of years ago and have hired and worked with him on other gigs. This guy has an amazing talent. He layers tracks so well, take full advantage of the technology he uses so well. He played such a great range of music hitting the HI-NRG peaks of hands in the air anthems, with some great trance inspired tracks, a hit of some rousing gospel house, and some great chunky beats. Truly a well thought out journey, clearly Steve Sherwood has arrived on the scene and shown that he can carry a full party, giving his fans and the party guests an emotional animated ride.
Congratulations to the Past Curfew team for continuing to raise the bar and making a special party for San Francisco and the many visitors of the weekend to share. I truly enjoyed every moment of the party.
