In a world rife with uncertainty having any sort of predictability is comforting. Last week I wrote about the dangers of expectations and how often they result in disappointment. There are however circumstances that deviate from that rule meaning exceptions exist. In the realm of monthly dance parties, Industry is an exception.
Over the course of my three year tenure in San Francisco I have attended every Industry party I have been in town for. I can consistently count on the party to be fun. Within the inner circle of those who “know”, Industry is a must. Mighty, as a club, stands apart from the traditional SF clubs by being smaller and more intimate but it is well maintained and big enough to get full of ladies and gentlemen ready to dance.
This past Saturday featured an opening set by Jamie J followed by Tony Moran. Jamie’s music selection was in-tune with his time slot unfortunately the execution fell flat. The beats were just shy of pots and pans, the transitions between songs were sloppy and there was no well conceived plan on how to move the crowd past the happy upbeat music he opened with. Luckily for the crowd Tony came on with a very well laid out road map of where he wanted the crowd to go and how he was going to get us there. In fact, the music was so seamless and well mixed I didn’t get off the dance floor until 4:30. And the only reason why I left was because common sense kicked in, not because I wanted to.
Jamie wasn’t the only thing that fell short on Saturday night and Tony wasn’t the only bright spot. The club was so crowded the ventilation system couldn’t keep up, the bartenders were overwhelmed, the lines for the bathroom were long and $6 for a gatorade is insulting. On the flip side the crowd was hot and very friendly.
My initial reaction was to give the party 4 bottles but I think my judgement was clouded by the fact I was surrounded by my San Francisco family. In retrospect I think the party is a solid 3 1/2 bottles. For a monthly party, that is a pretty solid showing. I can’t wait till next month!
