Halloween Weekend in San Francisco

Posted 31-Oct-2008 to Calendar

Halloween Weekend in San Francisco – as if we needed a reason to get dressed up and have fun! The weather forecast is for rain, and supposedly colder weather, but at the time I am writing this article it is raining, but actually warm.

This year there are many events to consider for your Halloween festivities, but there seems to be a lacking presence of home based costume parties, or yours truly was just not invited to any of them. Whatever your all hallows eve may have in store, there are many things to do, and here is some of what this weekend has to offer.

FRIDAY – October 31

Blood Pact by Tantra and Homochic

SomaArts Cultural Center – 934 Brannan Street (@ 8th)
10PM to 5AM

Blood Pact is a new event on the Halloween scene. It is put together by well known producers for their trance parties of the past (gosh I miss those) and other fun events. The event is being sold to an 18 and up crowd with a great line of interesting DJs including Digital Paradigm, Lord Kook, Liam Shy, and Rchrd Oh!? + Sleazemore. I have heard both Lord Kook and Liam Shy spin at events in the city for Pride and Love Parade and both know how to throw down some great pumping trance music. Additionally, there will be an outside tented entertainment area, which should add some fun value to this event. This will be a very alternative and fun party to take part in and the SomaArts space is a great open warehouse style feel, and I recommend this event if you are looking for something different with some cool music with a cool vibe. Costumes encouraged. Note to the flaggers and flow artists; because SomaArts is a very open style space, you should be able to find a corner and pull out your toys to play. This specific space was one of the first places I ever flagged, in my green with purple dots bear costume – ah the memories!

Asylum by Twisted

Warehouse Space at 511 Harrison Street (near the old Sound Factory)
10PM to 4AM

DJ David Knapp and Paulo, two personal favorites, are advertised in the early emails that went out, to be on for this party, as well as a host of others. This should prove to be a fun party, and it should be noted that it is also a benefit event for the Bare Chest Calendar Men of San Francisco. This is a great alternative party to the traditional Halloween dances, even if a bit more pricey. Note to the flaggers and flow artists; at the last time I checked with the production team, they plan bring in black light for this event and maybe even some performance boxes, so there should be some flagging opportunities here.

Adonis by Gus Presents

Space 550 – 550 Barneveld
10PM to Late

DJ Brett Henrichsen and Rob Kaftan, two of the scenes better DJs, will provide some great music for an event that sells itself as “Horror Movie Halloween”. I expect they will be showing some horror flicks on the giant screen on the stage, but I am not sure. There is also a promise of a performance by Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams and a cash prize costume contest hosted by Sister Roma. Space 550 is best reached with a car and plenty of parking can be found in the area. Note to the flaggers and flow artists; Space 550 is one of the few spaces with a full stage and lots of black light always available. The stage can easily accommodate 3 or 4 flow artists at a time, so spin to your heart’s content.

SATURDAY – November 1

Colossus by Gus Presents

Club 1015 – 1015 Folsom Street
10PM to Late

DJ Manny Lehman and Jamie J. Sanchez will be on deck for an event that sells as the “Halloween Hangover”. I also love that this event has the dress code is billed as “tore up, chilled out, super casual” so that worn out costume from tonight will get just a little more wear. As mentioned in many previous event suggestions I have sent out, this is one of my favorite club spaces in the city, and I understand some new lighting should be working for the main floor. Note to the flaggers and flow artists; the new lighting at 1015 (according to a close friend’s report) has some black light range gobo spots that are aimed to the stage, so this should provide some flagging opportunities.

Ghost Ship by the Space Cowboys

Airplane Hanger on Treasure Island
10PM to Late (or early depending on how you look at it)

The DJ line up on this event is too large to put up on here so please go to the Space Cowboys web site to check it out. This should prove to be one very different event. In the spirit of Burning Man, the Space Cowboys have found a 25000 square foot space on Treasure Island (I believe you can see this space from the City), and are turning it into one very amazing party (from what I read). The Flaming Lotus Girls, the Steam Punk Treehouse folks, THERM, Michael Christian, Orion Fredricks, Liam McNamera, and the Department of Spontaneous Combustion are just a few of the familiar names of Burning Man groups pulling this together. They have also gone as far as to offer a shuttle, fueled by bio-diesel, from Civic Center, every 30 minutes, to help with the limited parking and transportation issues at this space. Additionally, Comfort and Joy, one of the fun and friendly camps on the playa is creating a “Hidden Faggot Oasis” for the queer folks to enjoy, so go check this one out, it should be quite special.

SUNDAY – November 2

TEAse by Industry

Mist – 316 11th St between Folsom & Harrison
6PM to Midnight

This is an all new space with an all new party and put together by the talented Industry team. DJ Luke Johnstone, John LePage and Don Tix will be on deck to kick this new party off at this new 2 level space which has a glass dance floor that looks down on the main dance floor (talk about something really cool). This event will be a benefit to the AIDS Emergency Fund. So come out to this one to see the new space and check out a new SF event.

So there are my suggestions for an incredible, over packed, insane level of Halloween Fun. Get your costumes, put that fake blood in place, and head out and shake some scary grooves to the horrific fun of Halloween.
